Southland's premier rugby team is the SIT Zero Fees Southland Stags, which is based at Rugby Park Stadium in Invercargill as part of Rugby Southland.
SIT Zero Fees Southland co-captain James Wilson capped an emotional homecoming by being named the Stags player of the year at the 2018 end-of-season awards. Check a video clip of the presentation at Rugby Southland's official website.

In August 2017 a new Stags song and music video - The Southern Dream by New Zealand singer and songwriter Jason Kerrison - was released. The video features a number of well-known Southlanders.
