Invercargill 's city centre is the venue for a growing lnumber of events to delight people of all ages.
Halloween is celebrated at the end of October and a spooky Saturday morning in the CBD is the perfect time to dress up the children and bring them Trick or Treating in the heart of the city. Our retailers love to get into the spirit too - with many dressing their windows and handing out treats.
The Gingerbread House Competition in November/December is another fun city centre event that attracts entries and spectators from all walks of life. There is a small fee to enter the competition and all entries are put on public display to let people enjoy the creativity, sense of humour and talent of the creators. Children can also try their hands at decorating a gingerbread man; it;s a free activity in the city centre offered in conjuction with the Gingerbread House displays.
The City Centre Scavenger Hunt is a fun, free holiday activity over the summer. Children can collect maps from the Invercargill Public Library and follow a scavenger trail, looking in shop windows for clues. All completed and returned entries receive a small reward.
The City Centre Christmas Festival and Market is held in December and is a great way to get into the spirit of Christmas, have fun with the family and do some Christmas shopping. The Festival and Market combine stalls, food trucks and entertainment with Christmas specials offered by city centre retailers who decorate their windows with Christmas cheer. Come down and enjoy the day - there's something to see, do and eat for eveyone, no matter what your taste or your budget.
The Matariki Festival is held in June, which is a perfect time to have some festival cheer and celebrate the Māori New Year. Arts and crafts demonstrations, live entertainment, hot food and a covered market make a great mix for the whole family.
